Please note that only members of the University of Kent may access the Library during the 'self service' hours of the extended opening periods.
Access: Visitors are welcome for reference access.  They should be over 18 years old and bring identification that includes name and address.  School children under the age of 18 should contact the Library Office (tel. 01227 823124) prior to their visit.

All visitors should register at Reception when they arrive.  Access to the Library is controlled via turnstiles, see the Card Access page for details.

Members of other Higher Education Institutions may have borrowing or reference access via the SCONUL Access scheme.  For non-members of other Higher Education Institutions (or those for whom the above schemes are not relevant), and who wish to become borrowing members of the Library, please see our External Borrowers page.

In Summer 2008 a new Core Text Collection was created on Level 1 East.  Materials in this collection are for reference use only by all except University of Kent students and staff.
Brief Description of Library and its services: The University of Kent was established in 1965.  The Library serves a population of almost 12,500 staff and students and covers a wide range of subjects in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences.

Approx. 2,500 periodical titles currently subscribed to.
Approx. 900,000 books.
Electronic Resources: The Library subscribes to a wide variety of electronic resources, including ca. 13,000 e-journals and newspaper resources and approximately 4,600 e-books.
Special Holdings: The Library's Special Collections are strong in materials relating to the theatre, wind- and water-mills, local history, modern poetry and modern first editions.  Special Collections of rare books include: the John Crowe Collection (English Literature), the Maddison Collection (history of science), the Victorian and Edwardian Popular Theatre Collection, the Lloyd George Collection (signed copies). 

It's archival collections include the books and papers of Hewlett Johnson (the "Red Dean") and the papers of Lord Weatherill, the former Speaker of the House of Commons.  For more information, please see the Special Collections page.

The Library also provides a home for the British Cartoon Archive, which holds original artwork by renowned cartoonists, such as "Giles", as well as a collection of books on caricatures, cartoons and humour.  It is a registered museum dedicated to the history of British cartooning over the last two hundred years.

The Library is designated a European Documentation Centre by the Commission of the European Community.
